The objective of this project is to demonstrate an operative, efficient, and secure cloud computing technology for classifying buried metal as Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) or not, based on the analysis of multi‐coil electromagnetic induction (EMI) data.




Technology Description

It is proposed to combine EMI classification software and quality‐based workflows with state‐of‐the‐art cloud computing technologies. Cloud computing, in laymen terms, is internet based computing, or a simple way to access server computers, data storage, databases and a broad set of application services over the Internet. Using cloud computing, multiple central processing units (CPU¿s) can be accessed at once, speeding up computationally‐intensive processes. Simply stated, cloud‐based computing provides the structure and architecture to access and control complex, custom software applications without installing the applications on a local PC. The system will be provisioned and configured to run on a commercial cloud infrastructure and platform. Strong security policies and backup procedures will be adopted to ensure that all data is encrypted and safe while at rest or in transit. The software package will consist of several software applications and data storage containers. A UXAnalyze Web Server will provide the software services for all functionalities; including, UX‐Analyze Cloud System provision and configuration, identity and user permission management, project and survey planning, UXO data processing, targeting picking, reporting, auditing, and decommission of the system.


The benefits for moving the geophysical management and data analysis tools to the cloud include improved efficiencies, greater business agility, increased data availability, increased collaboration, increased processing speed, and cost savings. This cloud‐based data management and analysis technology can be used on all Department of Defense (DoD) sites that require underwater (or terrestrial) geophysical project work for UXO detection and classification. Additional benefits of performing EMI data analysis in the cloud include: Improved security of data and project information Increased productivity and transparency Increased IT and programmatic flexibility Automatic version control, activity logging, and auditing Streamlined process control with minimized data transfers These advantages are expected to add up to significant efficiency improvements, and thus cost savings to the government.
