The 2020 featured projects highlight scientific advances and technological solutions to some of DoD’s most significant environmental and installation energy challenges including:

  • understanding processes that control per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) fate and transport
  • predicting the mobility of munitions in the underwater environment
  • modeling non-stationary changes in riparian and aquatic ecosystems
  • replacing hard chrome and nickel plating in weapons system repair processes
  • remediating chemical contamination from complex geological environments
  • modeling battery energy storage system performance
  • detecting and classifying munitions underwater
  • monitoring nesting sites of protected bird species on DoD lands
  • reducing volatile organic compounds and hazardous air pollutants in weapons system topcoats
