The DoD’s pathway to achieve overall net-zero emissions requires reducing energy demand, shifting to cleaner energy sources, and sequestering remaining emissions. Carbon sequestration science and technology are essential pathways to reduce the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, and to mitigate the effects of climate change. SERDP and ESTCP have invested in research efforts for carbon capture and storage, including investigating the role of forests and other ecosystems in carbon storage and management. Additionally, ESTCP is demonstrating and validating methods of calculating embodied and operational carbon in facility construction and use, which is important to achieving net-zero emissions across DoD facilities.
