Open burn activity is no longer the approved method for disposal of wastes generated on forward operating bases (FOBs). Nor is it always appropriate to allow local contractors to haul and dispose of wastes generated on FOBs. Incineration of wastes is a solution, but there is a potential to derive energy from the combustion/disposal process. SERDP and ESTCP are investigating waste disposal processes that use less energy than current incineration processes and that will have the advantage of generating an energy source.
