Environmental Restoration
SERDP and ESTCP’s Environmental Restoration program area focuses on cleaning and managing contaminated lands on current and former military installations. It supports the development and demonstration of innovative technologies to characterize, remediate, and scientifically manage contaminants in soil, sediments, and ground, surface and waste water. SERDP and ESTCP areas of investment in this area include:
- Remediating and monitoring contaminated groundwater
- Managing contaminated sediments
- Managing contaminants on testing and training ranges
- Treating wastewater and drinking water
- Developing tools for improved risk assessment
Advances in science and technology provide the Department of Defense (DoD) with the tools it needs to effectively manage and restore its contaminated assets so as to protect the troops, their families, the public, and the environment. DoD is responsible for thousands of properties throughout the United States and around the world. These include both old and new training ranges and industrial production and maintenance facilities. In support of DoD’s Defense Environmental Restoration Program, this SERDP and ESTCP program area addresses both the legacy of past contamination, as well as the sustainment of testing and training ranges by advancing the knowledge needed to prevent future environmental damage on and around military installations.
