The 7th Workshop on Sustainable Surface Engineering for Aerospace and Defense will be held at Grand Hyatt of Denver Colorado. August 21-23, 2018.

Increased environmental and occupational, safety, and health regulations in the United States and Europe have impacted production and use of chromates, cadmium, and other chemicals in aerospace and defense surface treatment processes.  As a result, there is increasing need for environmentally benign alternatives that meet or exceed the performance requirements.  This workshop will cover all aspects of alternative coatings and surface treatments, with emphasis on performance, service data, approvals and implementation of clean coatings:

He is working on a project to improve buried, unexploded ordnance detection and classification by designing, constructing and testing a sensor system that is deployed from a shallow-water surface vessel.

Mr. Matthew Hohmann is a research ecologist researching multiple aspects of rare plant conservation, fire ecology, and invasive plant management.

Webinar - Plant Diversity and Biological Nitrogen Fixation in Longleaf Pine Ecosystems at Military Installations

Dr. Nina Wurzburger is an ecosystem ecologist who studies how nutrients affect the cycle of carbon. She will discuss her research on the nitrogen cycle of longleaf pine savannas to determine if and how biological nitrogen fixation replenishes the nitrogen lost from fire and land-use disturbances. Dr. Joseph O'Brien a Research Ecologist and the Fire Team Leader with the Center for Forest Disturbance Science of the USDA. His research has centered on fire science and the impacts of fire exclusion on ecosystem function.

Webinar - Managing Groundwater Impacts at Chlorinated Solvent Sites

Join SERDP and ESTCP on Thursday, October 4 for a webinar detailing results from Department of Defense funded research on the challenges posed by chlorinates solvents in groundwater as well as management options for chlorinated solvent sites. Dr. Andrea Leeson, the Deputy Director of SERDP and ESTCP and the Program Manager for the Environmental Restoration program area, will present an overview of SERDP and ESTCP’s research efforts on managing chlorinated solvents in groundwater, including preliminary findings from a two-day expert workshop in July 2018. Evan Cox, a senior principal remediation scientist at Geosyntec Consultants, will describe advances in electrokinetically-enhanced (EK) amendment delivery to effectively treat chlorinated solvents in silts and clays.

The DIVER project applies value of information (VOI) to outline a framework for the optimization of the site characterization process, such that the total cost of investigation, the cost of achieving remedial goals, and the risks of failure of remedial approaches are minimized.
