Advanced Geophysical Classification at Residential Sites
One of the final tasks in the ESTCP Classification Pilot Program is understanding the performance envelope of classification technology. Previous demonstrations have been on former target and training areas, often in remote locations. There are some Formerly Used Defense Sites, however, that have become residential areas over the years. Residential sites will likely have a very different clutter background than training targets – items such as sprinkler heads, construction debris, and utility connections. ESTCP is sponsoring two demonstrations designed to gather performance data at residential sites.
Parsons and Black Tusk Geophysics have demonstrated the MPV sensor at a residential site on the former Waikoloa Maneuver Area, HI. This demonstration was jointly sponsored by ESTCP and the US Army Corps of Engineers. Both dynamic (upper photo) and cued data (lower photo) were collected at a number of residences. After analysis of the cued data, targets were classified as either potentially hazardous or not and a number of the targets were excavated.
Early this summer, Weston Solutions and the Naval Research Laboratory will perform a similar demonstration of the MPV and the TEMTADS 2x2 sensor as part of a pilot study at the Spring Valley FUDS in Washington, DC. Results of the data analysis for these two demonstrations are expected in late 2016.
