Prescribed burning is an important management practice in pine (Pinus spp.) forests, many of which have evolved in the presence of fire and are a prominent vegetation type on DoD lands. Fire emissions are regulated in many areas and, as a result, the smoke that is produced must be managed based on its composition, production rate, and potential for transport away from the fires. Two areas of knowledge that SERDP-funded research has attempted to resolve are (1) characterization of fuel types, condition, and loading; fuel consumption; and resultant emission factors and (2) understanding the relationships between these factors.  More

Current petroleum-based solvents are widely used in the U.S. military but contain hazardous air pollutants and volatile organic compounds, which cause health and environmental problems. An ongoing ESTCP project is working to qualify and transition an environmentally compliant cleaning solvent for the efficient removal of such pollutants and other contaminants from DoD aircraft composite structures. Hydrophobic organic compounds like PCBs contaminate sediments at many DoD sites. Research has shown the inaccuracy of using sediment concentrations to infer exposures of receptors and corresponding risks. One way to circumvent the problem of using sediment concentrations to estimate organism exposures is to use passive samplers. An ESTCP project recently completed a series of SOPs for the preparation, deployment, and analysis of polyethylene passive samplers. More

As one of the nation’s largest federal land managers, DoD manages a diversity of ecosystems and numerous listed and at-risk species. To manage under uncertainty, new paradigms or frameworks for managing and conserving ecosystems, and at times focal species of interest, will be needed. In 2015, SERDP began funding research to advance the theoretical and applied basis for informing these new paradigms.  More

As part of this initiative SERDP and ESTCP sponsored ASETSDefense 2014: Sustainable Surface Engineering for Aerospace and Defensea technical workshop that provided attendees from DoD, industry, and academia the opportunity to exchange information related to the testing and implementation of environmentally friendly coatings and surface treatments. Members of the ESTCP Energy and Water team recently traveled to Fort Bragg, NC, home of the Army’s Airborne and Special Operation Forces, to tour several ongoing ESTCP projects. Fort Bragg is a critical installation for the Army as well an instrumental energy test bed for the EW program, currently hosting six active projects. More
