Former Spencer Artillery Range

Former Spencer Artillery Range

Site Description

Located in Spencer/Van Buren County, Tennessee, the 30,618 acre Spencer Artillery Range was established in 1941, and documentation identifies two impact areas: Jakes Mountain (5,060 acres) and Bald Knob (2,090 acres). Troop training took place until September 1944. Subsequent arrangements were made for Dyersburg Army Air Field to use the Spencer Artillery Range as an air-to-ground gunnery range. The site contains partially wooded and cleared areas. This demonstration will be conducted on three discrete areas within the former range: a 3.7-acre wooded area, a 4.4-acre open field area, and a 1.3-acre dynamic area.

Suspected Munitions Present at the Demonstration Site

37-mm, 75-mm, 76-mm, 105-mm, and 155-mm projectiles

Demonstration Summary

The Geonics EM61-MK2 sensor, the most widely used EMI sensor for UXO surveys, will be used in a single-sensor cart configuration for anomaly detection in all of the demonstration areas, but will not be used for classification as part of the study. Advanced EMI systems will be used to perform cued interrogation of a number of the anomalies detected. The commercial MetalMapper (MM) and the Naval Research Laboratory’s TEMTADS 5x5 will be used for cued interrogation in the open field area on 800-1000 anomalies. A number of man-portable systems also will be demonstrated in cued mode, including the TEMTADS 2x2x3 array, the Man-Portable Vector (MPV) handheld sensor, and the portable Berkeley Unexploded Ordnance Discriminator (BUD). These systems will be demonstrated in the wooded area on approximately 600 anomalies. In an open area of the site, the 1.3-acre area of approximately 200 anomalies will be used to demonstrate the MM system, MPV, and 2x2x3 array in dynamic mode—initial survey mode to identify and classify anomalies and then return in cued mode to the anomalies they detect for comparison. Multiple teams will collect data with the same sensors. Several types of classification processing will be evaluated, including statistical classification algorithms and library-matching algorithms.
